Spotify Lands Major Studio Deals, Prepares To Launch Movie Service

Spotify continues to negotiate with Facebook over its long promised U.S. launch. But that isn't the only thing the music streaming service has been up to. They've negotiated a number of deals with major movie studios to offer users streaming movies as well as music, a source in the industry tells us. Earlier this week we reported that YouTube plans a similar service (something we first wrote about last year). As with Google/YouTube, we're not sure when Spotify will launch the new service. But our best information suggests this Fall. And these aren't your standard Netflix/Amazon/iTunes type movie deals, either, we've heard. Spotify is aiming to offer users much earlier access to movies. Similar to the release dates that hotel's get for premium in-room movies. They're expensive, but users can often see them just a couple of weeks after they've been in theaters.

How to Sew a Spacesuit [Space]

The Apollo Spacesuit is one of the most intricate garments ever assembled, way harder to make than your last cos-play project and nearly too difficult for even NASA. In his new book, Spacesuit: Fashioning Apollo, Nicholas de Monchaux shows how Playtex helped to put a man on the moon. More »

The Hardware That Rocks Your World

There are really no words to describe the this photo, except to point out the obvious: It has a robot. And a bike. And a lady in white tights with really big hair.
In other words, this photo sums up all that is awesome and good and wonderful and yes, a bit juvenile about what we [...]

A pocket for your pocket

Need a pocket for your pocket? Then the new Maxpedition Mini Pocket organizer might be just for you. I love Maxpedition products. They’re utilitarian and very well made. One thing I don’t like about wearing pants with cargo pockets is that smaller items tend to move around loosely. The Maxpedition Mini Pocket looks like the [...]

C Skills team discovers Gingerbread root exploit

Gingerbread unlocked

The folks at C Skills have done their magic again, this time with Gingerbread (and possibly Honeycomb) and have released GingerBreak.  If you don't keep up with this sort of thing, the C Skills team are the people who brought us the rageagainstthecage exploit.  Besides having a run-on sentence for a name, this is the trick that can root any device running Froyo.  Since it isn't going to work on Gingerbread, the fellas have jumped ahead of the game and found one that will, and are pretty confident that it will crack Honeycomb and Froyo, too.

Now all we need is devices that aren't OEM unlockable to ship with Gingerbread so we can test it.

Square gets financial backing from Visa, asks to see some ID

Everything's coming up Jack Dorsey these days. Last week Apple started stocking Square's iPhone credit card readers in its 235 US retail locations, and now, according to Reuters, Visa has put its plastic where its mouth is. The credit card giant has invested in the personal payments startup, scoring itself a spot on Square's advisory board in the process. No word on how much Visa is actually dropping on the company, but one thing stands to reason: it probably didn't make the deposit via Verifone. If you would like to invest in a Square reader, it'll cost you a lot less -- the company is still offering smartphone plug-ins for free on its site.

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that's exactly what's going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It's a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won't be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you'd like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register -- or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

The Best Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I never learned how to play guitar. Whenever I'd pick one up, I'd awkwardly pluck at strings and cause the ears of anyone standing within 50 feet to bleed. Then I discovered Guitar Hero. Did it teach me how to play guitar? Absolutely not. But for the 3 minutes I'm engrossed in one of its songs on screen, I delude myself into thinking I really could be the next Hendrix. More »

Altaro Hyper-V Backup beta launched, only 250 places available

hyper-vbackupbeta
This one's for the sysadmins in the audience: Altaro, makers of our favorite "time machine for Windows" back solution, OopsBackup, have just announced a new product entering beta called Hyper-V Backup.

It's a backup solution for virtual machines running on Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization solution. If that sentence just seemed like a bunch of buzzwords crammed together, Hyper-V backup is not for you. But, if you actually use Hyper-V and are hankering for a good backup solution, Altaro might be worth checking out.

The beta run is limited - Altaro are looking for just 250 testers. All participants will get a free license key to the final, production version. So if you're interested in helping test Hyper-V Backup, get yourself over to Altaro now and join the beta.

Google demands veto on OEM Android changes, stretches definition of 'open source'

Google, according to reports from "a dozen executives working at key companies in the Android ecosystem" is finally locking down the open source and easily-fragmented Android operating system.

As it currently stands, Google hands over the 'final' code for each version of Android, and OEMs and developers then spend some time customizing the OS to fit their hardware, and to create a unique and marketable flavor. That's all set to change, however.

Over the last few months, according to several people familiar with the matter, Android licensees such as HTC, Motorola and Facebook, have been asked to sign 'non-fragmentation clauses.' This new contract caveat will give Google the right to review and pass judgment on all changes to the Android OS. Two executives at Facebook say that they're unhappy that Google gets to review its changes to Android -- which is understandable, given Facebook and Google are direct competitors -- and there have also been allegations that Google is preventing some Verizon devices from shipping because they include Microsoft's Bing instead of Google search.
